J-720 (J720) 1869 10c, NGC PF64. Dramatic Nickel 10c! R-7+. This ten cent proof pattern coin is struck in nickel. Subdued mint luster is seen within the devices. The toned surfaces are predominantly grey and tan with speckles of green, blue, and red. The reverse is a shade or two lighter than the obverse but just as nicely colored. One or two minor marks keep this coin from the gem grade. It is well struck on the obverse but somewhat softer on the reverse because nickel is a hard metal, and the design did not quite strike up.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the coins shows Liberty seated looking left. In her right hand she holds a LIBERTY inscribed Union shield. In her left hand is a Phrygian cap on pole. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, interrupted by Libertys head and pole, is in an arc above, and the date is below. Dentils are at the periphery of both sides of the coin. The reverse shows a wreath corn, cotton, wheat, and tobacco around the denomination written on two lines as ONE DIME.
This trial piece was struck from regular dies. In addition being struck in nickel, it was also made in copper and aluminum. The designation R-7+ means that 4 to 6 pieces are known. In their population reports, both major grading services show 2 in PF64 with 2 better.
