1871 S$1 J-1148 NGC PF-65RB. A wonderful and rare pattern, this is one of the patterns that was sold in sets of twelve at the time. The original design was made by James Barton Longacre, but as he passed away in 1869 chief engraver Barber executed the design.
A seated female is on the obverse, with a globe displaying the word Liberty in front of her. A flag with 22 stars is behind her, and thirteen regular stars are around. In her right hand is a pole with Phrygian cap, and she herself is dressed in an Indian dress, nicknaming this design the Indian Princess. The reverse is that of a regular 1871 Silver dollars. Struck in copper with a plain edge, and certified by NGC in a new holder so that the edge is in fact visible.
This is a rare gem of this scarce and popular pattern, with original Mint red color showing in the protected fields. Various shades of purple, lilac and orange show as well. In the 2009 edition of the Judd book, this piece is designated as low rarity 7, with 7-12 pieces known in all grades. Sharply struck and of exceptional quality, this pattern is sure to please any specialist of patterns or silver dollars!
