June 20th 2024 - Rare Coin Set Building-Early Rarities

Hello All

I hope all is well. The dog days of summer are upon much of the country with a giant heat wave. That heat is evident in sectors of the rare coin business despite the time of the year or what's happening with frozen orange juice or shares of gm. I thought it might be a good time to revisit a concept that's been around as long as humans saved a special coin or an odd looking coin in a jar somewhere and that is the concept of assembling a set of coins.

Once upon a time decades ago in fact, I felt it a mission almost to help collectors assemble simple type sets of coins and that idea of course evolved over many years to a type set of better date's for example and that morphed into mini sets of gold coins which of course ultimately led to me helping build sets of coins ranging from early silver dollars to early half eagle gold ( it's a set I built which is still number one in the NGC registry after many years. Actually number 2 now because of lack of completeness you see none of the common ones are contained in the set that I built but the great rarities that nobody ever has are in fact contained in my set hence shall remain at least for now the number 1 set by a country mile for a set of early half eagle gold coins containing the great rarities ). It's been my experience over many years that collectors who gravitate toward building a set tend to also do better from a financial standpoint when the set is sold in the future. You can be assured that your set will attract not just bottom feeders and quick buck artists but instead a deeper sort of collector, might I even say numismatist who may find himself interested in more than one of the coins in your set and so on. Of course there's also the more generalized box of twenty which I suppose can be like a custom developed mutual fund of numismatics?

1st Year of the Civil War-All CAC'd 1861 Philadelphia Gold set

There's a number of ways you can take part in building a set. While building a complete set of United States Gold Quarter Eagles would be a most interesting investment in the years ahead, there's much smaller |mini" sets, type set of Early Bust Dollars for example, or an early gold type set consisting of just the heraldic eagle reverse or possibly with both the heraldic eagle and the first smaller eagle, go even further and attempt a type set of US Pattern coins just choose a denomination. That could keep you busy for many years and surely you would learn enough over time to pick the dealers clean because of your own market knowledge at times. The American Civil War allows for numerous set and mini set building opportunities that could become solid investments as well if popular enough, for example who would not want to own a 6 piece 1861 Civil War Gold Set

This week we are proud to offer you an amazing 1st year of the half dollar and a highly desireable one at that: 1794 50c PCGS VF20 CAC followed by incredibly rare Early Gold Quarter Eagle choice about uncirculated 1797 $2.50 NGC AU53, an intensely rare and superb choice about uncirculated American Early Half Eagle 1796/5 $5 PCGS AU58, off the stagecoach for a turn to a choice brilliant uncirculated 1891-CC $5 PCGS MS63, back to the start of the American Civil War with a choice about uncirculated 1861 $20 NGC AU53, then from the wild west also Civil War select uncirculated 1861-S $20 NGC MS61, followed by a near gem and just breathtakingly sharp 1864-S $20 PCGS MS63 and finally an 1865 pattern or prototype with pedigree 1865 J-443 $3 PCGS PF65 CAC

Choice and Rare 1799 Set - 1799 Early Gold Set

We hope to have helped you focus perhaps on building something which may take some time but will ultimately be a numismatic prize.

The market is a good one, strong, targeted and healthy. Collectors seem to know what they want and are out in droved searching for their special coins before another interested party adds them to their holdings.

Please take a look at the preliminary descriptions on the listings that follow and follow up with more in-depth research prior to adding to your collection and/or portfolio. Please bear in mind that there are active buyers who subscribe to our list so if you see something you've waited for for awhile, it would be my suggestion to begin the inquiries as soon as possible as at that point I can mark "hold" on that specific coin which will allow you more time to do what you have to do in order to pursue the specimen.

These are the type of coins you would like to have in your retirement portfolio yes? Tom has been in the business for 40+ years and would be delighted in helping you find specimens from this famous mint, beit be individual coins as gifts to leave behind or in developing a collection of coins for investing and collecting purposes. United States Gold Coins are collected and invested in world wide hence the huge base of interested collectors and investors search for these coins for collecting, long term capital appreciation and as a legacy for their children and grandchildren.
