March 14th, 2024 - Wild Wild West - Carson City Extravaganza
I hope all is well. This week we travel to the wild wild west, Carson City to be specific and what was produced at the Carson City Mint. While Civil War was raging across the country, a miner named Henry Comstock who dicovered the largest silver deposits in history. This made necessary the need for a new mint, built at Carson City which came about years later and supplied the country with at first silver coins then gold in which to facilitate business. The discovery was initially made in 1859, which meant that silver and gold which was originally shipped to San Francisco for minting which cost a lot in addition to other dangers along the way, could now be done in Nevada.
Consider for a moment some of the news and activities of the day out west, remember the TV show starring Pat Conway & Richard Eastham: Tombstone Territory?
Yes yes I know that Tombstone Territory was portraying life in that town in Arizona in 1882 and this tells you what it was like for these miners panning for gold, mining for silver were up against. Indian attacks, robberies by thieves and outlaws yet Carson City overcame that and produced some of the rarest and most desirable coinage in the country! Some of the loveliest Morgan Silver Dollars come with the famous CC on the reverse while some of America's great gold rarities were produced at the Casron City Mint.
