Type Set Coins and Ideas
Hello All,
Winter time is upon us, er, in most places. Even here, the temps dropped down to the 50's last night! Brrr. Many of us over the years have assembled a basic "Type Set" of gold coins consisting of a quarter eagle, half eagle, eagle and double eagle and once upon a time had them in capital plastic holders (remember those?). That was a very basic 4-piece type set. Then it was expanded to include a gold dollar and three-dollar gold but most collectors seemed content with 4-piece type sets which generally included common date coins and were from a numismatic standpoint, boring. Some of us however began getting more creative and there's really a ton of ideas for type sets whether you are assembling them for yourselves or to gift a young person, child or heir.
Some of the ideas: have you thought about a Southern Type Set or a San Francisco Type Set, just as example which would include a denomination struck in any of the Southern mints or in San Francisco? A full Philadelphia set but not with any common coins but better date or even rare date coins. If you have the bucks to do so, have you thought about a Proof Gold Type set? That would be a wonderful investment and if you would like to gift anyone believe me this is something that could last a lifetime. It could also mean a college education for a young person when the time comes. Want to take it a step into the next dimension? How about a type set of United States Pattern Coins? Wow! You can really get creative with this and make a solid investment as well!
The following are some scarce rarities from Philadelphia any one of which would be a good start to a type set of better-dated United States Gold.
