November 12th, 2025-San Francisco-Wild West American Gold

Hi All,

I hope all is well. I feel a need to stress the fact we are in a very healthy coin market. I've had several calls in the last week along from new customers who wanted to buy but the coins they inquired about were either just sold before they called or just put on hold by another dealer. Please bear in mind that the inventory you see listed on my website is also offered to several other dealers who are actively selling from the same inventory you are seeing first! Your competition is other dealers ! Hence the following disclosure which I suppose at least for now will be on every newsletter while this bull wakes up and starts doing what bulls usually do. This week we're picking gold coins from America's wild wild west. Consider for a moment how these gold coins were transported after being struck. On stagecoaches and guarded at time by government troops who had to fight off robbers, hostile Indians and others who wanted that gold! The first listing went on a ship, the SS Central America (  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Central_America ) that sank!

PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL TO HOLD ANY COIN ON THIS LIST OR ON THE WEBSITE WHILE YOU CONDUCT YOUR RESEARCH. THIS IS A VERY ACTIVE MARKET, AND THE INVENTORY YOU SEE IS THE SAME INVENTORY THAT IS ALSO OFFERED TO OTHER DEALERS WHO ACTIVELY SELL TO THEIR CUSTOMERS COINS ON OUR LIST AND MORE THAN ONCE IN JUST THE PAST WEEK A CLIENT HAS REQUESTED INFORMATION ON A COIN OR SENT AN EMAIL TO PURCHASE ONLY TO BE TOLD " SORRY BUT THAT ONE WAS JUST SPOKEN FOR". PLEASE REQUEST A HOLD WHILE CONSIDERING WHICH DOES NOT OBLIGATE YOU TO ANYTHING BUT WILL GIVE YOU THE NEEDED TIME FOR RESEARCH ETC.

This weeks special picks begin with a very special and scarce half eagle of 1857-S from the SS Central America 2 that does not display the usual tell tale signs of salt water issues but instead is beautiful and even semi prooflike. An amazing discovery. Next up is an uber rare pre-Civil War 1860-S half eagle in high grade very choice about uncirculated ( within months shots would ring out at Fort Sumpter signaling the beginning of America's War Between the States) followed by yet another rare but gem quality half eagle of 1880-S in MS-65, to an 1893-CC Eagle in select uncirculated condition with beautiful color and quite rare, a very choice uncirculated double eagle of 1873 Closed 3 $20 PCGS MS62, an uncirculated 1874-CC double eagle , an intense 1894-S double eagle graded MS-64+ by pcgs and sporting a cac sticker all leading to the grand finale represented by a nearly unique R-8 1870 $10 Eagle pattern in aluminum and in gem condition.

Please contact us to purchase or ask to put on hold pending your review.

1857-S $5 SSCA2 PCGS MS61

From the SS Central America 2 Shipwreck (w/ gold pinch)., this rare 1857-S half eagle is Sharply struck, lustrous & somewhat prooflike. Premium quality ( PQ ) and almost impossible to duplicate with very few brought up from Davey Jones locker making it even tougher to find this nice and pristine.

$11,750

1860-S $5 NGC AU58

Very rare pre-Civil War half eagle from the San Francisco mint, with only 2 specimens graded finer. Total population not including regrades which are likely are NGC 4/2, PCGS 7/0!

$17,350

1880-S $5 NGC MS65

Gem uncirculated 1880-S Half Eagle. 1880 was when San Fransico established itself as a financial powerhouse. Presented here is an incredible half eagle struck in that year and a rare one especially in high grades with this coin being 1 of only 20 coins thusly graded at NGC with NONE FINER. Only 7 at PCGS and none finer.

$6,175

1893-CC $10 PCGS MS61

Beautiful and scarce 1893-CC Eagle with beautiful color, Ex-Fairmont collection. Would make a great example for a type set of Carson City Gold or just as an individual rarity as investment. Wholesale Bid=$23,000. PCGS:$37,500.

$25,750

1873-S Closed 3 $20 PCGS MS62

Scarce Type II double eagle issue. Less than a dozen finer. Choice surfaces and above average eye appeal. Quite brilliant and appealing. Tough to find this nice.

$10,000

1874-CC $20 PCGS MS60

Beautiful and crusty 74-CC double eagle. By 1874, when the Comstock mines were reaching their peak production the new mint at Carson City was producing these highly desirable double eagles which in this case survived all the perils of the wagon trains that transported them with the present specimen somehow maintaining it's uncirculated condition throughout it all and is now offered to you the collector and investor. Carson City gold coins like this are few and far between and highly desirable to own.

$21,850

1894-S $20 PCGS MS64+ CAC

Wow, PCGS MS-64 PLUS, and a CAC approval to boot. Amazingly sharp and original this 1894-S double eagle is off the charts in terms of eye appeal . Could be waiting a long time to find an example this nice.

$7,950

Pattern-J-1036 $10 PCGS PF65 CAM-CAC

Extremely rare pattern Eagle of 1870 struck in aluminum which at that time was more valuable than gold. 1870. R-8. *CAC. Aluminum w/ regular dies. Only 2 known. Quite an opportunity for the pattern specialist or investor. CAC pop 2/0.. Combined population of 2 coins including the present specimen with exceptional eye appeal and incredibly deep watery proof contrast between devices and fields. PCGS shows 2 and none at NGC.

$26,350
