October 16, 2024 - Early American Gold Type Set

Hello All

I hope all is well. Our prayers with everyone affected by this crazy stormy year with extra prayers for them in western North Carolina, just north of us on the west coast of Florida. Other than a little bit of roof, a lot of leaves from my 100+ year old Southern Oaks, some smaller branches tossed around as well as a skinny palm tree snapped in half laying across my backyard everything is ok. FPL's push to change us from pole electric to buried electric this past year I believe was a great benefit as more than 3 Million Floridians went without power this past week. Millions more in the other states. But thankfully the vast majority of folks who went without electric here on the west coast of Florida for a few days have it back on now, not everyone but most. From over 3 million without electric down to about 250,000 as of this writing, most are in the Sarasota-Tampa area which is north of me.

The other day a client asked me about early US gold as a possibility of where to park some money and how do I feel about it? In his case he's not looking for fast returns on his money and indeed is looking for something historically and numismatically important to set aside for his Grandchildren's college education or in his words" to start a business or just have a little kick start from Grampa", what would be the best way to have one of each as he did not feel he had enough funding or time to pursue a "set" of early Eagles for example. He told me he wants to "buy smart". This led me to also give some thought to this week's cherry picks and include what I have available today in this realm or at least identify an early US Gold Type Set that can be assembled right now from top of the line coins that are at least for now are in stock.

Lagniappe: In my opinion it is more interesting and a better investment over time to choose better die varieties of these coins as for a very small premium the collector or investor currently has the opportunity of securing rarer varieties within an already rare series for nowhere near the mathematical differences that should be the value and one day will most likely be but for now it's happy hunting.

1797 $2.50 Quarter Eagle Gold NGC AU53

BD-1, R-6. Renowned early rarity. With the famous and very neat die crack traveling down the right side of every 1797 quarter eagle, this specimen, one of perhaps two dozen survivors in total that exist in all states of preservation overall is lovely and highly desirable. Truley choice Early American Gold Coin. Quite nice to view in person for some reason has put up a struggle to the photographer, higher resolution images available upon request. Highly desirable early American gold to multiple persons be they collectors and investors.

$91,000

1802/1 $5 PCGS MS64

Absolutely amazing early gold half eagle overdate, 1802/1 half eagle in PCGS MS-64. This incredible half eagle is of museum quality and just amazing how such a beautiful gold coin could survive the last 200+ years and not be used or mishandled. Frosty surfaces from when the coin was made and a strong strike makes this specimen among the finest. A genuine American prized highly collectible and desired top of the game gold half eagle usually seen in much lower circulated grades. from a private collection of connoisseur acquired American rarities. BD-7, R-5. Smooth, lustrous near-gem. Only 3 numerically finer. Old holder. Ex- 2008 Stacks @ 63,250. Populations combined with some duplications 20/2 12/1

$68,900

1795 13 Leaves $10 NGC MS60

America's First Eagle Gold coin. BD-2, R-4+. Pretty & lustrous. Rare in Uncirculated condition. (Pops inflated by resubmissions.) 1st year of U.S. gold coinage production and the Eagle was the largest gold coin struck for circulation in the United States until the introduction of the Double Eagle in 1850. Truly Early American Treasure, Early coinage and especially gold coinage struck during the beginning years of the Philadelphia mint are highly sought after and generally off the market for years.

$162,500

For a little over $300,000 a 3 piece early gold type set can be assembled right now and assembled with top quality, rare specimens in high grade. A fully choice brilliant uncirculated set could be assembled for quite a bit more, while a strictly about uncirculated trio could probably be assembled for a significant discount. There are numerous varietal rarities that offer great long term fun as well as value. These are coins that offer tremendous investment potential especially long term as they are not subjected to the phony manipulations more common material seems to be open to from time to time. Cannot happen here with the earlies making these and coins like these the true-blue chips in early American Numismatics.
