Thomas Jefferson 250th Annversary Silver Dollar. 1993 $1.00 Thomas Jefferson 250th Anniversary. This modern commemorative Jefferson dollar boasts deep, reflective black mirrored fields and strongly frosted, blast white contrasting devices on both sides, which make the coin a cameo. The piece has a sharp, full strike as expected for a modern proof coin.

It also has highly original surfaces as indicated by the very light haze seen in the lower portion of each side. The coin is in its original holder and box from the United States Mint and comes with a certificate of authenticity and biographical information about the coins engraver, James Ferrell. The Thomas Jefferson Silver dollar was produced as a commemorative to celebrate the 250th birthday of Thomas Jefferson.

It was struck by the Mint under legislation passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton on December 14, 1993. The obverse design shows a left-facing profile of Jefferson, which was based on Gilbert Stuarts Medallion Profile. This 16.1 x 18.4 inch portrait was done in watercolor and crayon on paper. It was a family favorite and, according to Ellen Coolidge, Jeffersons granddaughter, the Medallion is an incomparable portrait, and the only likeness I think that gives a good idea of the original. The coins legend THOMAS JEFFERSON dot ARCHITECT OF DEMOCRACY surrounds the portrait with LIBERTY below along with the designers initials. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is to the right, and the dates, 1743 and 1993 are to the left and right.

The reverse shows a view of Monticello with the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The word AMERICA is incuse and not frosted to contrast with the background. MONTICELLO appears above the building and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the S mintmark are below. The denomination, ONE DOLLLAR, is at the lower periphery of the coin.

The specifications are as follows: The coin has a weight of 26.730 grams and is composed of .9000 silver and .1000 copper with a net weight of .76 troy ounces of silver. Its diameter is 38.10 millimeters.
